A symposium to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hu Sheng, a renowned historian and Marxist theorist, was held in Beijing on Wednesday.

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met Hu's family members before attending the ceremony.

Hu, who passed away in November 2000, had been vice chairman of the seventh and eighth CPPCC National Committee from 1988 to 1998.

"Hu has been remembered for his firm faith, loyalty to the Party, diligence and integrity," said Huang Kunming, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
