Nan was the initiator and founder of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope project (known as Tianyan). He died of lung cancer on Sept. 15. The Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee honored Nan with a posthumous title of "role model of our times" in November.

Huang said that Nan was the role model of our times as he devoted great energy to implement the innovation-driven development strategy and helped to build China into an innovation-driven country. He said Nan was an outstanding representative of the scientists in a new era. As a true patriot, a devoted and selfless scientist and a persistent and upright person, Nan should be an example of all scientists, he said.

Huang said scientists and researchers should study and implement the guiding principles of the 19th CPC National Congress and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and make strides in scientific discovery and research.

The briefing was co-hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee. It was attended by government officials, scientists and researchers, university faculties and students in Beijing.
