The Chinese mainland firmly opposes any form of official or military contacts between the United States and China's Taiwan region, a mainland spokeswoman said on Friday.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks after five United States lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on a military plane on Thursday.

The visit seriously violated the one-China principle and relevant provisions of the three China-US joint communiques, Zhu said. "It sent a wrong signal to 'Taiwan independence' forces."

Zhu urged US politicians to handle the Taiwan question prudently, stop inciting and supporting secessionist activities for "Taiwan independence", and stop playing the "Taiwan card" and stirring up trouble.

"Otherwise, it will only cause further damage to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," she said.

Zhu also said any attempt by the Democratic Progressive Party authorities on Taiwan to seek independence by relying on the US and engaging in so-called parliamentary diplomacy will come to no good end and is doomed to failure.
