On the morning of Dec. 1, the Information Office of Shandong Provincial People's Government held a press conference to brief on Shandong's work on strengthening grain quality supervision and ensuring grain security.
Shandong is a major base of grain production, storage, circulation, processing and transformation in China. Its total grain output has been above 50 million metric tons for six consecutive years, and its total annual grain purchase and sales have exceeded 140 million metric tons. Shandong also ranks among the top in China in grain and oil processing capacity, its annual processing capacity of wheat, corn, peanut oil are 43.85 million metric tons, 27.25 million metric tons, 3 million metric tons respectively, accounting for 22%, 21%, 39% respectively of the country's total. Shandong shoulders great responsibility to guarantee grain safety.
According to Meng Jun, deputy director of Shandong Provincial Bureau of Food and Strategic Reserves, in recent years, the bureau has taken multiple measures to enhance quality supervision, including carrying out special actions and inventory taking and strengthening quality testing, system assessment, and publicity and guidance, to effectively ensure food quality, safety and reserve.
In the past three years, financial investment at all levels in Shandong has continued to increase, reaching a total of 289 million yuan to improve the capacity of grain quality inspection. The existing laboratories in the province cover an area of 44,000 square meters, with 3,364 pieces (sets) of apparatus and equipment, which basically meet the needs of grain quality and safety inspection and testing. Inspection institutions at all levels test more than 20,000 grain samples annually.
In addition, through the establishment of relevant system and standards, grain quality in Shandong has been effectively guaranteed, and the public brand "Qilu Grain and Oil" has won fame across the country.
