Beijing State-owned Assets Management Company, which builds and operates some key venues for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics, has selected China Unicom to provide the venues with 5G and other new technologies.
The agreement was made official at a signing ceremony on Thursday at the National Stadium. The day coincides with the 11th anniversary of the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
According to Zhi Jun, chairman of Beijing State-owned Assets Management Company, the partnership with China Unicom would help to bring better services for visitors as well as support for the management of Winter Olympic venues, including the National Speed Skating Arena, the National Aquatics Center, and the National Stadium.
Beyond 5G, China Unicom also plans to provide the venues with AI technologies and edge computing, which places compute resources closer to where data is captured to reduce network latency and bandwidth usage of cloud computing.
“As the official telecommunications service provider for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, we will support the much-anticipated event with a secure, smart network that allows superfast internet speed,” said Mai Yanzhou, vice president of China Unicom. “We will also deploy pioneering applications to inject new vitality into the Olympic Games.”
