China will make its industrial sector greener with better structure and pollution control, according to an official plan released Wednesday.

By 2020, energy consumption per unit of industrial value-added of certain large firms should decline by 18 percent compared with the level in 2015, according to an action plan made public by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Green manufacturing and high-tech businesses should account for a larger share of the industrial sector. Overcapacity in traditional industries such as steel should be cut, with the total steel capacity in north China's Hebei Province to be below 200 million tonnes by the end of 2020.

The ministry will strengthen controls of companies with unauthorized locations, lacking relevant certificates, and failing to meet emission standards while help cultivate smart manufacturing solution providers.

The development of new energy vehicles will be supported, with more buses, garbage trucks, and logistics vehicles to be powered by clean energy, according to the plan.
