The first China-Europe freight train linking southwest China's Chengdu and Russia's St. Petersburg arrived in St. Petersburg on Monday.

The train left Chengdu on Feb. 21, carrying supplies for a key gas chemical complex project built by a Chinese company in Russia under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Qiu Qunfei, Commercial Counselor at the Chinese Consulate General in St. Petersburg, said that the new China-Europe freight train route will add impetus to the trade cooperation between southwest China and areas around St. Petersburg.

The new route has greatly shortened the travel time for commercial goods between Chengdu and St. Petersburg and opened up a major transportation channel.
