It comprises chambers of commerce, industry associations, investment promotion agencies and think tanks across the world.

At present, the alliance has more than 110 members from 29 countries and regions with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) serving as the secretariat.

The alliance plans to hold a roundtable meeting annually to promote closer cooperation among members. The first roundtable meeting on Wednesday attracted more than 80 members from 24 countries and regions.

It is with the spirit of openness and collaboration that this alliance was set up, and sharing and exchange to create mutual success is the key purpose of the global alliance, said Vincent Lo, chairman of the HKTDC.

Proposed by China in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative aims to build trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes. It comprises the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
