Zhongguancun Science City will offer more and better services to research-oriented universities and institutes and give support to the innovations of top companies while relocating non-capital functions, according to the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission (BMSTC).
This move and the building of Beijing into an innovative center of science and technology are in line with the overall plan of intensifying supply-side structural reform and accelerating the construction of an innovative country in President Xi Jinping’s report to the recently concluded 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
As a coordinator, promoter and participant of these efforts, the BMSTC is pushing forward the following six major tasks according to the requirements of the central government departments and the Beijing Municipal government: Undertaking major national scientific and technological projects; speeding up the construction of Zhongguancun Science City, Huairou Science City, Beijing Future Science Park, and Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (E-town); deepening the comprehensive innovation reform and piloting in Zhongguancun; gathering and attracting high-end technological talents across the globe; facilitating the transfer and transformation of technological achievements; and mounting up efforts to build a community of coordinative innovation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
According to the BMSTC, the undertaking of major national scientific and technological projects requires targeting the cutting edge in science and technology across the globe, enhancing basic research and fostering technological strength. The construction of science cities and development area requires highlighting key general technology, cutting-edge technology, modern engineering technology, and disruptive technology and innovation to promote the integration of the internet, big data, artificial intelligence with the real economy.
In addition, there are three interconnected innovation clusters in the neighborhood of Zhongguancun Science City. To contribute to the innovation efforts, each cluster will set up an innovation community to build a space for academic exchange.
