On July 21, 2012, Beijing suffered from heavy rainfall and flooding. Zhang led his veteran volunteer team to drain off 5,000 cubic meters of water and clear up 2,000 meters of drainpipe along the West Fourth Ring Road. He led his team to areas that were hit the hardest by the rain in Hebei Township of Fangshan District to clean more than 2,000 cubic meters of mud and rocks caused by landslide, pump more than 5,000 cubic meters of water, clean up 300 square meters of mud, and reinforce 2,000 meters of the riverbank.
