A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on May 17 called for increased capability for developing the Chinese philosophy and social sciences.

Improved abilities to develop original theories is important to the formation of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said at a symposium.
Liu called on those involved in social sciences to make theoretical and academic innovations based on China's contemporary situation, use Chinese theories to interpret practices and develop new theories from current practices.

Noting the guidance of Marxism within Chinese philosophy and social sciences, Liu called for increased study of the central leadership's speeches and the application of Marxist views and methods in social science studies.
CPC organizations at various levels should increase support for philosophy and social science research, according to Liu.
