The book series, consisting of four categories about Chinese pioneers, martyrs, masters and legendary figures, was compiled and published by several publishers including the Zhonghua Book Company and Xuexi Publishing House, led by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Apart from the books, a manual was designed to facilitate teachers' guidance on reading the material. A website has also been developed for organizing and sharing reading activities all over the country.

The books are aimed to foster patriotism, especially among young people, and cultivate those with a sense of responsibility to shoulder the mission of national rejuvenation.

A total of 50 books of the series were published in the first batch which will be followed by a second and third series, adding up the total number of books to 310 by 2021.
