A western China-themed cultural event kicked off in Miami in the U.S. state of Florida on Monday, providing a rare opportunity for residents to learn about one of the Asian country's fastest growing regions.

The three-day event consists of screenings of Chinese films featuring western China, a photo exhibition of the natural scenery as well as the region's lifestyle and economic development. There's also an exhibition of its folk costumes and musical instruments.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Wang Yanwen, associate inspector of the Department of Human Rights of China's State Council Information Office said it is hoped that the event could bring a dose of the diverse culture of western China to Miami.

The ceremony was attended by over a hundred guests from Miami's social, cultural and academic communities as well as the local government.

"The exhibition is absolutely beautiful," said Olga Ramudo, president and CEO of Express Travel, a local tourism solution provider. "I wish I could go to western China tomorrow."

Jamila Hardemon, a local resident and a teacher, told Xinhua that she appreciated the mix of China's history, culture and fashion at one event.

The event, "Experience China -- Cultural Exploration of West China in the United States," is co-organized by China's State Council Information Office and Chinese Consulate General in Houston.

It runs until July 5 in Houston and Florida.
