A 60-kilometer canal linking Beijing and Hebei Province will open for tourists in July next year, a Beijing official said at a State Council Information Office press conference on Wednesday.
"You could take a boat from Beijing to Hebei," said Cui Shuqiang, a member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China Beijing municipal committee and an executive vice mayor of Beijing. “This canal will drive the promotion of high-quality development of the Beijing municipal administrative center and northern three counties of Langfang.”
The city of Sanhe, Dachang Hui Autonomous County and Xianghe county form the "northern three counties of Langfang," an exclave of Hebei Province surrounded by Beijing and Tianjin municipalities.
The project will join the 40-kilometer Beijing section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal with the 20-kilometer Hebei section.
"We are now working on connecting the two sections," Cui said.
