China is aiming to transform Beijing into an international science and innovation center by 2025, with hopes that the capital will become a world-leading hub for scientific research by 2035, officials said on Wednesday.
Quantum information technology, artificial intelligence, block chain, health related biosciences and other cutting-edge fields will receive more support in terms of basic research and more help achieving new breakthroughs, Li Meng, vice-minister of science and technology, said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Moreover, Beijing will establish more world-class science and technology research institutions and proactively integrate into the global innovation network, Li said. This includes enhancing international cooperation on climate change, energy and resources, public health, artificial intelligence and other common issues.
Jin Wei, Beijing's vice-mayor, said the capital will become a global science and technology innovation center by 2025. By 2035, the capital will become a world leader in innovation capability, competitiveness and influence in regards to science and technology research.
Beijing will also support researchers who are looking to make breakthroughs in the creation of integrated circuits, new materials and equipment and high-end instruments, Jin said.
