China produced the world's second-largest number of high-quality research papers in 2019, according to a report revealed Tuesday.

China published 59,867 high-quality research papers in 2019, accounting for 31.4 percent of the world's total and ranking second after the United States, said the report conducted by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The report defines high-quality research papers as those published in international scientific journals with high impact factors and citations. The report included a total of 394 international scientific journals and showed that 190,661 high-quality research papers were published in 2019.

Four Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Peking University, are listed among the world's top 10 universities in terms of the number of published high-quality research papers, according to the report.
