In 1989, Xining launched an afforestation campaign in the two mountains as the city started on a long journey of green development. With the support of the government and the efforts of thousands of people, the green coverage ratio of the area increased from 7.2 percent in 1989 to 75 percent today, setting a successful example for planting trees in the high and cold desert region.
