Beijing cleaned up 329 areas of poor sanitation in the first three months of the year, and plans to construct 15 more treatment facilities for domestic waste this year, according to a report from the municipal government on April 24.
Over the first three months, Beijing carried out three inspections on living environment across 132 blocks and townships, and cleaned up 329 out of 335 areas of poor sanitation. The remaining six and another 249 areas of poor sanitation newly discovered during inspections will be treated in the next round of actions by the city.
The report also ranks the city’s top performing districts in terms of dealing with environmental issues. Among districts equipped with core capital functions, Dongcheng district ranked at the top. Shijingshan district ranked first among districts developing urban functions; Tongzhou district performed the best among new areas of urban development; and Huairou district was first among ecological conservation areas.
The inspections found that slag vehicles a major challenge to the sanitation of suburban areas and villages. In response, the city handled 936 such cases, accounting for 94.83 percent of the total.
So far, nine out of 15 domestic waste treatment facilities have begun construction, including facilities for incineration of solid wastes, renewable energy generation, comprehensive garbage treatment, kitchen waste disposal, ecological treatment of organic matters, landfill renovation, recycle of construction wastes and so on.
