Big data expo to be held in Guiyang

China International Big Data Industry Expo will be held from May 26 to 29 in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province.

The supercomputing technology for processing the astronomical big data collected by the world's largest radio telescope nicknamed China's Tianyan or "Eye of Heaven," will be exhibited for the first time during the 2018 China International Big Data Industry Exposition to be held in Guiyang, Guizhou province from May 26 to 29, it was revealed at a press conference for the event in Beijing on Feb. 28.

As the world's first big-data-themed Expo, the expo sponsored by China's National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, State Internet Information Office and People's Government of Guizhou province has been successfully held for three consecutive years, serving as a platform for global big data professionals, organizations and entrepreneurs to discuss industry trends while presenting their latest achievements.

According to Li Zaiyong, executive vice governor of Guizhou province, this year's event will display cutting-edge technologies for collecting, storing, integrating, managing and applying big data, and cover the latest achievements of nearly 400 companies worldwide in artificial intelligence, blockchain, social governance, industrial innovation, smart cities, the sharing economy, data security and integration of big data and the real economy.

Centering on data, intelligence and integration, the expo will be composed of six themed exhibition galleries on data applications, cutting-edge technologies, digital hardware, innovation and entrepreneurship, digital experience, and international achievements, as well as an exhibition area for cities of Belt and Road partners, Li introduced at the press conference. 

Participants at the press conference had a sneak preview of some of the latest virtual reality (VR) achievements which will be on show. In front of a screen, an instructor guided a woman in VR glasses that she can have a closer look at the stone lion in the Forbidden City by simply moving a step further.

The exhibition, covering an area of 60,000 square meters, is expected to host over 400 exhibitors and over 50,000 participants. So far, Companies like Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Oracle, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Huawei, 360, Inspur and Iflytek, and prestigious scholars including Don. Tapscott, father of the Digital Economy have confirmed their attendance.

The event will also display 5G application scenarios, share work on cutting-edge big-data-research, as well as release a report on the big data industry's development and a list of 10 major disruptive and future technologies. 

A summit on e-commerce innovation and five high-level dialogues will take place, involving government officials, industry and company leaders, scholars and experts to discuss e-commerce, AI, data security, the Internet of Everything, sharing economy, and targeted poverty alleviation.

Wu Hequan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Internet Society of China, said in an interview that China has the foundation, advantages and potential to develop big data, but there remains a gap with developed countries. 

In recent years, Guizhou has made considerable efforts to develop a big data and relevant industries. Now, with 8,900 big data companies settling down in the province, Guizhou's big data industry boasts a total industrial scale of over 110 billion yuan (US$ 17.34 billion).
