Beijing will eliminate all dark and odorous bodies of water in the city this year, as part of its fight against water pollution, according to the Beijing Water Authority.

The task includes treating 84 sections of dark and odorous bodies of water in non-built-up areas of the city.

Of the 141 sections of black and odorous bodies of water spotted in the city, 57 located in built-up areas were treated in 2017 through measures such as installing sewage pipelines and building interim sewage treatment plants.

As the city expands with a growing population, the water pollution challenge comes to the fore, especially dark and odorous water.

Also on the agenda this year, the city will add 420 kilometers of sewage-collecting pipelines, renovate 225 kilometers of rainwater pipelines, and build 100 kilometers of recycled water pipelines.

Over the past two years, Beijing has built 582 kilometers of sewage-interception pipelines and 12 sewage treatment plants.

Beijing has adopted the public-private partnership model to deal with water pollution, raising nearly 20 billion yuan (US$3.13 billion) of private capital over the past two years.
