The 2017 National Science and Technology Award honored 78 projects in Beijing on Jan. 8. One project took the special top prize, five received first-place prizes, and 72 landed second-place prizes.

The number of Beijing-based prize winners accounts for 36.1 percent of the total, marking a record high.

The Preeminent Science and Technology Award, which is the country's top science award initiated since 2000, had been given to 29 scientists, among whom 20 are from Beijing.

During this year's award ceremony, the top awards were given to explosives expert Wang Zeshan and virologist Hou Yunde.

Hou, a leader in the scientific community in biomedicine, is the 20th Beijing-based laureate who won the preeminent award.

Other scientists and research institutions in Beijing also received multiple awards for their breakthroughs in agriculture, new materials, artificial intelligence, and information technology.

Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park, the country's leading incubator for scientific and technological innovation, boasts more than 50 national award-winning projects in this year's award ceremony, accounting almost two-thirds of all the winners in the capital city and nearly one-fourth that of the whole country.
