Beijing has most invention patents in key strategic emerging industries

Beijing ranks first across China in the number of invention patents in the fields of energy conservation and environmental protection, biology, new energy, new materials, new energy vehicles and aerospace, according to a white paper on the situation of the patents in strategic emerging industries issued by the Beijing Intellectual Property Office on Nov. 30.

Beijing identifies nine industries as "strategic emerging industries," including energy conservation and environmental protection, new generation of information technology, biology, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, new materials, new energy vehicles, aerospace and cultural creativity.

The white paper shows that the number of invention patents authorized in Beijing's strategic emerging industries reached 17,509 in 2016, accounting for 16 percent of the national total last year. The capital had a sum of 76,373 invention patents in the strategic emerging industries by 2016 -- the most in China, accounting for 17.3 percent of the national total.

The capital ranks second across the country in the numbers of invention patents in the fields of new generation of information technology, high-end equipment manufacturing and cultural creativity. 

The white paper also shows that the number of invention patents authorized in 2016 in the key areas of Beijing's strategic emerging industries has increased by 27.9 percent year-on-year, 12.9 percentage points higher than the growth of the overall number of authorized invention patents.

The number of the application of the invention patents in the strategic emerging industries accounts for about half of that of all patent application in Beijing, with patent application in the new generation of information technology, biology and energy conservation and environmental protection most active, according to the paper.
