On Jan. 1, the terminal of Beijing's new airport completed the construction of its roof and walls, according to the new airport construction authority.

The terminal complex includes a terminal building for passengers, a transportation center and underground rails, covering a total construction area of over 1.42 million square meters. The terminal covers about 700,000 square meters, the transfer hub about 80,000 square meters, the parking building about 250,000 square meters, the service building about 140,000 square meters, and the floor for the train station and the station hall about 250,000 square meters.

The terminal complex adopted sophisticated design and construction technologies in its roof and glass curtain walls, and used multiple innovative and advanced engineering technologies and construction materials in building its standing seam metal roofing, non-transom curtain walls, large ultra-white glass, C-shaped aluminum skylight frames, intelligent sunshade skylight glass, and double-layer ventilated glass curtain walls.

The outer layer of the terminal and transfer hub comprises a metal roof and glass curtain walls. The steel net rack comprises a steel bearing plate at the bottom, a composite layer for heat preservation, soundproofing and water resistance in the middle, and a double metal panel for sun shading, ventilation and water draining on the surface. The steel net rack supports the metal roof in a dynamic, curved design. The curtain walls surrounding the core area and the corridors of the terminal adopted the ultra-white double glazing and double-layer ventilated glass curtain walls for simplicity.

The major natural lighting system on the terminal roof consists of a central skylight, six strip-shape skylights, eight bubble-shaped windows, and a lighting belt running through the middle of the corridor. Every one of the tens of thousands of glass pieces has an unique "identification card," and consists of four layers with the outer ones in glass and a hollow one in the middle. Inside the hollow layer are "intelligent" aluminum meshes in good order, which can adjust angles with the changing curves of the roof to deflect intense sunlight, guarantee natural lighting, conserve energy and protect the environment, while contributing to a beautiful and comfortable ambience inside the terminal.

Moreover, the terminal and the parking building have been awarded as a national "three-star" green building, which is the highest standard, and the first "AAA" level energy saving project in China. With the clerestories and the natural lighting belt facilitating the natural ventilation and lighting, the terminal has also taken indoor PM2.5 filtering measures and set up carbon dioxide monitoring devices. The intelligent light emitting diodes in public areas would save energy as well.

This year, the terminal will be furnished and have the facilities installed, and the business registration of the new airport managing company is estimated to be complete by the end of 2018 to get ready for the inspection, calibration and pilot run in 2019.
