The International Tourism Alliance of Silk Road Cities convened Friday a meeting in Türkiye's Istanbul to discuss tourism cooperation between alliance members.

Established in 2023, the alliance partners with renowned tourism cities globally to promote sustainable tourism development along the Silk Road. So far, a total of 63 cities from 28 countries, including Istanbul, have joined the alliance.

In his opening remarks, Wei Xiaodong, consul general of China in Istanbul, called for expanding cultural exchanges and promoting harmonious coexistence and mutual achievements among civilizations.

He also expressed hope that Istanbul and other alliance members can uphold the Silk Road spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual benefit.

During the meeting, Francesco Frangialli, honorary secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, highlighted international tourism as a significant facet of a globalized society.

Frangialli pointed to the Belt and Road Initiative and tourism cooperation activities promoted by UNESCO and the UN tourism organization, hailing their roles in facilitating the global exchange of goods, ideas, languages, art, and cultural practices.

During the event, member cities showcased their distinctive tourism resources, including natural and cultural attractions.
