Urumqi is the capital of Xinjing Uygur Autonomous Region. It is the region's political, economic, cultural, science and technology, and transportation center. It sits in the heart of the Asian continent and among all the cities in the world, it is the furthest from the sea. Urumqi is China's westernmost metropolis along the second Europe-Asia continental railway line, and it also represents the opening up drive of the vast areas of western China.
