Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 in Boao, Hainan province, highlighted China's stable policies, ongoing opening up and the Hainan Free Trade Port as important factors shaping regional and global cooperation.
Shipley, who has extensive experience in international diplomacy and economic affairs, said that in the eyes of many around the world, China is a stable, reliable, articulate voice. She noted that even in response to recent global conflicts, China's policies have been "very consistent," adding that countries large and small have praised China's stable foreign policies.
As to the Hainan Free Trade Port, Shipley described it as a very important initiative and noted that many enterprises, including foreign ones, are expected to come to Hainan because of the port. She said she hoped to learn more about the port but added that the initiative is exciting and looked forward to expanded economic cooperation in the future.
Regarding China's 15th Five-Year Plan and its continued opening up, Shipley said the plan sends a very clear signal that China will continue to open its economy. She described this as a strong message from the "two sessions," which will attract global business opportunities and encourage multinational companies to continue cooperating with China.
Shipley emphasized the role of the Boao Forum as a platform for dialogue and engagement, saying it allows businesses to better understand policies and the business environment, and establish cooperative partnerships. She added that the forum provides a space for political leaders and entrepreneurs to sit together to understand future trends and negotiate collaboratively.
Shipley's remarks underscore China's growing role as a stabilizing and connecting force in regional and global affairs. They also highlight the significance of continued openness and initiatives like Hainan Free Trade Port in promoting sustainable and inclusive development.
