Beijing expands water supply network

Beijing is set to enhance its water supply security with the upcoming completion of the Daxing branch line, a new pipeline connecting to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

The new line, which includes a 46-kilometer main line and a 14-kilometer connection to the Daxing International Airport water plant, will provide a second water supply channel for Beijing.

Ji Guoqing, an official of the Beijing Water Authority, said the recent completion of the new airport water plant connection line means the Daxing branch can now supply water to the Daxing Airport area, establishing a second water transmission channel bringing water from the south to Beijing.

The new route provides critical backup for urban water security during maintenance periods or emergencies affecting the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route, Ji added. It will serve as an emergency water source for both the airport water plant and the Beijing Daxing International Airport Economic Zone.

Once fully operational, the Daxing branch will enable Beijing and Hebei province to serve as mutual emergency water sources, allowing bidirectional transmission and resource sharing. This infrastructure advancement supports economic development in southern Beijing and adjacent Hebei areas, strengthening regional cooperation.
