Shou Xiaoli:
Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. Welcome to this meet-the-press event held by the Press Center for the Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). It will be July 1 in two days, and we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. This 100-year journey has surged forward with great momentum, and the Party's original aspiration remains even firmer than ever. As the Party celebrates its centenary, the CPC Central Committee has decided to award a commemorative medal for "Glorious 50-Year Party Membership" to Party members who have been in the Party for more than 50 years and who have consistently performed well. Over 7.1 million veteran Party members have been awarded the medal. In addition, inspired by the Party's faith and guided by model Party members, a large number of comrades joined the Party this year. It is the generations of Party members who have passed on the traditions of the Party and practiced its original aspiration and mission that have maintained the vitality of the Party membership and kept the Party's cause vigorous and thriving.
We are very glad to have invited two Party members who have been awarded the "Glorious 50-Year Party Membership" medal and two newly recruited Party members to meet and have exchanges with you on the topic of "Passing on the Party Traditions, and Carrying Forward the Founding Mission." Now please allow me to introduce them one by one. They are: Mr. Zhao Pubo, chief welding engineer of China 19th Metallurgical Corporation; Mr. Sui Senfang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at the School of Life Sciences of Tsinghua University; Ms. Liu Jinhua, secretary of the 11th Party branch of the Department of Retired Officials at the General Office of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC); Mr. Long Bing, a self-employed truck driver from Cha'anpu town in Taoyuan county, Changde city, Hunan province. Next, let's invite them to introduce themselves one by one. I will give the floor to Mr. Zhao first.
Zhao Pubo:
Ms. Shou and friends from the media, good morning. I am Zhao Pubo from China Minmetals Corporation. I am 24 years old. I'm an ordinary welding technician and a new Party member. It is a great honor to be here today for this event. I feel a little bit nervous and very excited. I come from a small mountain village in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province. At the age of 16, out of curiosity and a longing for welding sparks, I chose the profession of welding. The first time I put on a thick protective suit and the cool protective mask, I felt the hardship of welding, which is unimaginable to common people. The bouncing welding sparks can reach a temperature as high as several hundred or even over a thousand degrees Celsius, and can even burn my skin through the thick protective suit. These scars on my arms have marked my growth, but I have no regrets about my choices. The bright sparks and beautiful scars accompanied me to the highest podium of the 45th WorldSkills Competition. I realized my dream to be a champion and secured a third consecutive win for China in welding. Youth is supposed to be spent on hard work, and I aspire to be a highly-skilled inter-disciplinary professional of the new era, contribute my share to turning "Made in China" into "Perfectly Crafted in China," and win more honors for the Party and the country. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
We need groups of craftsmen like Zhao to build a strong modern socialist country. We also need groups of young people to join the Party and infuse new vitality into it. Thank you, Mr. Zhao. Next, the floor goes to Mr. Sui.
Sui Senfang:
Friends from the media, good morning. I joined the Party in 1965, and have been a member of it for 55 years. I began to study in Tsinghua University in 1964, and became a teacher there upon graduation. As part of its efforts to further cultivate young teachers, the university sent me to Germany to study for a doctorate after China started its reform and opening up. I returned to the university after getting my PhD in 1988. So far, I have been working in the university for 50 years. I study life sciences, or to be more specific, protein structure, with cryo-electron microscopy. This technology helps to observe the structure of biological macromolecules and cells, and is already one of the most popular technologies in life sciences, playing a very important role in the searching for the origin of life, precision medicine, and drug development. With some efforts and outcomes in protein structure study with cryo-electron microscopy, I was elected as academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Chinese scientists demonstrate their perseverance through making pioneering efforts, overcoming successive difficulties, and bravely scaling new heights. This also characterizes the efforts of the Party members to fulfill the original aspiration and the founding mission of the Party. Thank you, Mr. Sui. Now let's invite Ms. Liu to introduce herself.
Liu Jinhua:
Ms. Shou and friends from the media, good morning. I am Liu Jinhua, 79, and have been a Party member for 52 years. I worked in the Great Hall of the People before retirement, serving the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries and the political activities of the Party and the nation. After retirement, I began working as secretary of the 11th Party branch of the Department of Retired Officials at the General Office of the NPC Standing Committee, serving retired officials. I was born in the old society, and did not go to school and get a job until the people achieved liberation under the leadership of the Party. I was selected and transferred to work in the Great Hall of the People by chance in 1960, and had worked there until retirement. I witnessed the dedication of the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries to the people during my time there. Inspired by their fearless spirit, I did not flinch at hardships or heavy tasks, never mind personal gains and losses at work, and have developed a firm faith of remaining committed to the original aspiration and following the Party. I am proud to have worked in the Great Hall of the People, and will carry forward its spirit of loyalty and dedication, while following the Party closely even though I have retired. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Ms. Liu follows the Party closely even though she has retired, and as a veteran Party member and retired official, she stays true to the original aspiration of serving the people at an ordinary post. Next, let's invite Mr. Long to introduce himself.
Long Bing:
Ms. Shou and friends from the media, good morning. I am Long Bing, 36, a new Party member from Cha'anpu town in Taoyuan county, Changde city, Hunan province. I chose my career as a truck driver after retiring from the military in 2007. When the COVID-19 outbreak struck Wuhan at the beginning of 2020, relief supplies could hardly reach there. After getting to know that my hometown, Changde, had lots of supplies to be transported to Wuhan, I communicated with relevant government departments about my willingness to help. I then lived and ate in the truck for 32 days, making 11 round trips to Wuhan and other places to deliver vegetables, rice, milk and other supplies, totaling more than 300 metric tons and travelling a total of 12,000 kilometers.
I had the honor to participate as a representative of truck drivers at a symposium with community-level representatives held during General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit to Hunan last September. I was nervous and excited at that time, for I had never thought to be able to sit with General Secretary Xi face to face. General Secretary Xi said that there are no born heroes, only brave mortals. The words inspired me a lot. I had the honor to join the Party in June this year. As a new Party member, I always keep in mind General Secretary Xi's words, and will always work on the front line no matter at what post I am, as long as the Party and the people need me.
Shou Xiaoli:
The members of the CPC are exactly those who live up to the standards of their identity in everyday life, bravely stand up at crucial moments, and selflessly make sacrifices in moments of crisis. Long Bing has demonstrated his demeanor in harm's way, and withstood the tests in the fight against the epidemic.
Thank for your introduction. We can see that they come from different industries and fields, and include both veteran and new Party members. I believe their stories of staying committed to the Party's original aspiration and founding mission are inspiring. Next, we will move on to the Q&A session. Friends from the media, please identify your news outlets before asking questions. Now, the floor is open to questions.
_ueditor_page_break_tag_Beijing Youth Daily:
Today we have not only veteran Party members with a Party standing of over 50 years, but also young ones newly recruited into the Party. Could you share with us your stories of joining the Party? Why did you apply for Party membership? What were your original aspirations back then? Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
I suppose you all have something to share. Mr. Sui, please go ahead first.
Sui Senfang:
I am a veteran Party member with a Party standing of 55 years. I still remember when I first walked onto the campus of Tsinghua University for enrollment in 1964, I saw a large horizontal banner on the road that read "Tsinghua University—Cradle of Patriotic Engineers." I was excited because the dream I aspired to realize at Tsinghua was exactly to become a patriotic engineer serving the construction of the country. There were many outstanding Party members around at Tsinghua, and a team of counselors who were both senior students and Party members. They took care of newcomers like us not only in work and study, but also in life. They not only studied well, but also always served as role models with high political awareness. I admired them very much, and felt that I should be like them—be "both red and expert" (both socialist-minded and professionally qualified), aim high in the technology field, and win honor for the country. Therefore, I applied for Party membership, and joined it in my sophomore year. To become a socialist-minded and professionally qualified person who aims high in the technology field and wins honor for the country was my exact aspiration back then, and I have been striving for it over decades. Thank you.
Liu Jinhua:
I joined the CPC in 1969 when I was working at the Great Hall of the People. Although it has been many decades, I still have very fresh memories about joining. Premier Zhou Enlai often took part in activities at the hall, so he became familiar with the staff working there. Every time he came, he would ask us some questions about our work, study and daily lives. But his greatest concern was whether we'd joined the Party. It was difficult for those of us working at the Great Hall of the People to join the Party. Eligible candidates had to meet very high standards. I submitted a membership application four times, before finally, with the help of other comrades and through my hard work, I became a CPC member. I reported this to Premier Zhou and he was very happy. He told me: "It's not enough to join the Party in name. It's more important to join the Party in thought, which requires long-term efforts." I have always kept his words in mind. I understand that we join the Party once in our lifetime, but we must live up to the mission of the Party throughout our whole life. If we want to join the Party in thought, we must be committed to achieving the mission for all our life. Here, I can assure Premier Zhou that I will always remember his words. Thank you.
Zhao Pubo:
I joined the CPC because of my tutor who is a veteran Party member. I was inspired by the exemplary and vanguard role that he, as a Party member, had played. I remembered that in the latter half of the training for the 43rd WorldSkills Competition, my tutor had an operation on a thyroid tumor. However, as head coach of the national team, and facing the important task of winning medals at the WorldSkills Competition, he came to the training base as soon as he was discharged from the hospital to help the athletes improve their welding skills. Thanks to my tutor's unremitting devotion and efforts, my colleague won the gold medal for welding at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition, which was a new breakthrough since China participated in such a competition. My tutor and colleague, who were both Party members, fulfilled their duties when the Party and the country needed them. They were examples that I should learn from, and also my heroes. Their exemplary deeds made me understand that the CPC is the vanguard of the Chinese working class and the Chinese nation. I wanted to become one of them, and become an excellent worker and a proud CPC member. Thank you.
Long Bing:
I'd also like to share my story. I participated in the rescue efforts during the flood of Hongze Lake in 2003. It was less than a year after I joined the army, and is still fresh in my memory. I saw a lot of CPC members working on the front line fighting the flood. They carried sandbags, fixed dike breaches and helped evacuate affected residents. I was deeply impressed by my squad leader, a young Party member who was then only 21 years old. He worked on the front line for several days in a row. His shoulders had many scrapes, and his hands were covered in blood blisters. Despite being extremely exhausted, when duty called, he still managed to bear the pain and rushed to the front line. I was awestruck by the CPC members and became eager to join this great organization. Since then, I became strict with myself, so that I could join the Party as soon as possible. In my hometown of Chayanpu township, and on my way to and from Wuhan, I saw a lot of CPC members working tirelessly on the front line, sparing no pain in the fight against the epidemic. They didn't fear hardship, tiredness or sacrifice. I was deeply touched by their courage. I expressed my desire to join the Party as soon as I came back from Wuhan. I became a Party member earlier this month, and my long-cherished dream came true while the Party is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding. This is my great honor, and I'm very excited about it. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Next question, please.
_ueditor_page_break_tag_Workers' Daily:
My question is for Mrs. Liu Jinhua. You devoted yourself to the development of the Party branch even when you were about to retire. After your retirement, you worked even harder and were even busier than before. What is it that motivates you? Thank you.
Liu Jinhua:
Thank you for your question. I became secretary of our Party branch in 2005, and retired in 1997. As secretary, I'm definitely busier than before, as I need to gather people to study, hold activities and help those veteran comrades in need. Moreover, our activity room covers nearly 600 square meters, which needs to be cleaned up every day. Some veteran Party members said things to me like: "What are you doing this for? You're old and have retired." Well, I'm not doing it for anything special. I just want to ensure that the veteran Party members can still feel they are part of the organization after they have retired. Despite their retirement, they are still managed by the Party. The Great Hall of the People is the place where we worked, studied and grew up. We spent almost our entire lives there. We should not leave people feeling lost after their retirement. Therefore, the Party gave us this place. Thanks to the trust and recommendation from my fellow comrades, I took on this responsibility and served for 17 years. During this period, I brought joy to my fellow comrades, and everyone feels happy to be able to get together to study. I'm happy because my fellow comrades are happy. It's true. Some people have looked at me and asked: "Why do you look even younger after all these years since you retired?" I'm delighted to hear that, as it means my efforts were not in vain. Moreover, the spirit followed by staff members working at the Great Hall of the People, featuring loyalty, dedication and devotion is not empty talk, and we must prove it through our actions. It's my loyalty to the Party to ensure the work of our Party branch at the primary level. I'll continue to serve my fellow comrades. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Mrs. Liu has profound feelings for the Great Hall of the People and her work. Next question, please.
China Media Group:
My question is for Mr. Sui and Mrs. Liu. First, I'd like to congratulate both of you on receiving the commemorative medal awarded to CPC members who have been Party members for 50 full years or longer as of July 1, 2021, which is truly a great honor. What was your first thought when you received the medal? What do you most want to say? And what would you like to say to young CPC members? Thank you.
Sui Senfang:
Thank you for your questions. It's my great honor to receive the commemorative medal. I have witnessed the remarkable changes in our country over the past 50 years, especially the great changes since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policies. I began setting up my laboratory at Tsinghua University in the 1980s after I returned to China from abroad. There was barely any equipment, and we built it from scratch. After 30 years, our scientific and research equipment has become competitive with that in the top universities in developed countries. This represents one of the remarkable changes. I think it would be impossible to have got to where we are today without the leadership of the Party, or the strength and prosperity of our country. However, we must be aware that there is still a gap between our country and developed countries in terms of the overall development of science and technology. We must continue to strive to close the gap. Only through progress in science and technology can we make our country strong. I hope young Party members and scientists knuckle down, work hard and pool their wisdom, so as to build our country into a leader in science and technology. Thank you.
Liu Jinhua:
The National People's Congress held a grand ceremony to award the commemorative medals at 10 a.m. on June 16. I was extremely excited to receive the medal from Yang Zhenwu, secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee. I felt honored, proud and happy as soon as I received the medal, just like the other veteran Party members. This honor represents a recognition by the CPC Central Committee and general secretary of the work that we veteran Party members have done over the past several decades. It also showcases their care and concern about us. I'd like to say that most of the medal recipients are just ordinary Party members, but the Party has not forgotten us, and the general secretary has not forgotten us. On this occasion, they've shown their great care and concern for us. I feel privileged to live in this great nation, to witness this magnificent era and to be a member of this glorious Party. I'm happy and proud. Despite my retirement and my age, I will continue to contribute to the cause of the Party and live up to the standards of being a Party member. To the younger Party members, I'd like to share with you the spirit of the people working at the Great Hall of the People, which is loyalty, dedication and devotion. Whatever job you do, as long as you keep committed to this spirit, I believe your life will be rewarding. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Loyalty, dedication and devotion — Mrs. Liu's words are really inspiring for the younger generation. Next question, please.
_ueditor_page_break_tag_Hong Kong Economic Herald:
My question is for Long Bing, who braved danger to aid Wuhan during the COVID-19 outbreak. After the epidemic broke out, Wuhan was locked down. Everyone wanted to leave the city. Why did you choose to go there? You traveled 11 times to Wuhan to transport supplies. Were you nervous or afraid? What made you stay on? Thank you.
Long Bing:
Thank you for your question. At that time, I saw on TV that the epidemic was serious in Wuhan, and that they were in urgent need of materials after lock-down. However, the assistance materials from other places could not get in. As a truck driver and veteran, seeing the situation in Wuhan, I was eager to do something for the people of Wuhan. There were a batch of materials in Changde bound for Wuhan without vehicles to carry them. Therefore, I applied without hesitation. Temperature checking and whole-vehicle disinfection abounded my way to Wuhan, a more than 400-kilometer drive from Changde. The nearer to Wuhan, the more frequent the safety warnings were from my GPS. It would be a lie to say that I was not afraid or nervous at all. However, the positive energy along the way moved me to keep going. I remember the staff in a gas station on the way to Wuhan gave us free water and food after recognizing that our vehicle was to deliver assistance materials. Meanwhile, local drivers who saw the banner on the front of our vehicle honked to express gratitude for us. The volunteers fetching the materials said time and again, "Mr. Long, thank you for your hard work!" When I saw that local residents were in dire need of materials, I knew that I had made the right decision. Just as I was departing back to Changde, a volunteer ran to me and asked if I would come back to Wuhan again. Seeing the anxiety in his eyes, I answered resolutely that I would. Though I once felt nervous and afraid, I never felt regret about my decision. Thank you.
CENTV:
My question is for Zhao Pubo and Long Bing, who both joined the CPC this year. How will you two fulfill your admission oath? Also, how will you play an exemplary role as a Party member in your daily life? Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
There were questions for the two veteran Party members. Now the question is for the two new Party members. Who will answer first?
Zhao Pubo:
I will answer first. I still remember that in early June this year, my colleagues and I made a solemn vow in front of the Party flag. The ceremony took only a short period of time, but it is a life-time commitment to be a good Party member. I want to observe the oath with my hard work. Now, I am the assistant coach of the welding event in the 46th WorldSkills Competition. I want to teach more young people the skills I learned, and help them to achieve their technical dreams. Once I finish that work, I will return to my position as soon as possible and create more value with my skills, fully displaying the exemplary role of a Party member. Thank you.
Long Bing:
A few days ago, in my hometown, Cha'anpu town, a ceremony was held for new Party members to make a vow. It is easy to remember the 80 words of the Party's admission oath, but it is harder to live up to it for one's whole life. I will learn from these two excellent Party members, and respect, love and serve the Party. I will work hard to receive the commemorative medal after 50 years like they did. In the future, I will uphold my responsibility as a former soldier and as a Party member to earnestly deliver every batch of goods with my truck, and take concrete actions to uphold the Party's principle of serving the people. These are what I should do as a Party member. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
Just as Mr. Liu said, we join the Party once in a lifetime, but we need to follow the Party's ideology throughout our entire lives. In this regard, we should respect and learn from the two veteran Party members. Now, please go on with questions.
_ueditor_page_break_tag_Cover News:
My question is for Mr. Sui. What promoted you to choose your research field? You have met many excellent teachers when you were a student, and you have also cultivated many excellent students yourself. How would you understand General Secretary Xi Jinping's expectation for "exemplary teachers?" Thank you.
Sui Senfang:
Thank you for your questions. I will begin with the first one. My research field now is in life sciences, but my undergraduate major was mechanical engineering, and my postgraduate major was physics. I remember that, in the 1970s and 1980s, when I was studying physics, there was a trend in the international academic field, which was using modern physics technologies to restudy biology at the molecular level. I sensed from the trend that the interdisciplinary study of physics and biology would have great potential. In the early 1980s, when Tsinghua University decided to restore the biology department, I determinedly transferred to the biology department from the physics department, and began my academic study in the life sciences. Looking back, my sensitivity to emerging academic subjects and my multi-disciplinary background benefited me a lot during my biological studies.
As for the other question, at the end of April this year, before the 110th anniversary of the founding of Tsinghua University, General Secretary Xi Jinping paid a visit there, and emphasized that we should all strive to become "exemplary teachers." This left me with a deep impression. That was an enthusiastic expectation for us college teachers. Reviewing my life in research, I knew deeply that to be an exemplary teacher, one must conduct studies in a down-to-earth manner and solve practical problems. My work is about basic research, which tolerates no falseness and exaggeration. One must endure loneliness and have patience in order to make achievements.
An "exemplary teacher" must be a model for others and foster talent for the Party and the country. One of my students gave up the position at a prestigious foreign university, and returned to work full time at the School of Life Science in Tsinghua University in 2010. His return has led to the rapid rise of Tsinghua's cryo-electron microscopy research and facilitated the development of China's structural biology. Last year, my student's student returned to the country amid the epidemic after studying aboard. He is very energetic and wants to solve difficult and key issues in the life sciences. When I see my students in their positions, devoting themselves to their career and beginning to achieve results, I feel so delighted and proud. Therefore, I hope to spend my remaining life making more contributions to China's life science development and cultivating more high-quality students who will be more excellent than me. Thank you.
The Beijing News:
I want to ask Mr. Zhao Pubo, you impressed the world with a welding torch, and you have also endured many trials. Can you share with us how you stood out from the many students at the time to step onto the world stage? How do you view the craftsmanship spirit? Thank you.
Zhao Pubo:
During my six years studying welding, I encountered many setbacks and failures before finally stepping onto the world stage. My experience can be summarized in a word: persistence. I remember one occasion, when I was welding a test piece that was taller than me, a drop of molten iron fell onto one of my shoe through clothes. The temperature of the hot liquid iron was close to 1,000 degrees Celsius and so burnt a hole in my foot. In order not to fall behind in my training, I persisted and made it through by relying on the entrepreneurial spirit of "no delay in a day, no slack in a day." I think there is no shortcut to success, only hard work. I think the craftsman's spirit is to do one thing well in an entire life; to do the best job they can. Thank you.
_ueditor_page_break_tag_CRNTT:
We are about to celebrate the centenary of the CPC. Do you have anything to say to the CPC? Can you share with us? Thank you.
Liu Jinhua:
This year marks the centenary of the Party. I have so much to say to the Party. I was born in 1942 to a needy peasant family in Xuchang, Henan province. My family was very poor when I was a child. My father was forced to flee home because of famine. He begged for food all the way to Zhoukou, Henan province. Later, our family all settled down in Zhoukou. It was the CPC who emancipated us and enabled me to receive an education, and later got a job, and then the opportunity to transfer to the Great Hall of the People. I have been working in the Great Hall for nearly 40 years, listening to the instructions of the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries and learning from the fearless spirit of the older generation of revolutionaries. I lived with my parents for 18 years before spending 60 years being educated by the Party in the Great Hall of the People. Today, I feel lucky that I can still sit here and communicate with you. I know that without the Party, I wouldn't be here today. Thank you.
Sui Senfang:
Over the past century, the CPC has gone through ups and downs, surmounted countless difficulties, and led our people to turn a poor and backward country into a prosperous country. One of the most important things our Party has always adhered to is its commitment to serving the people. It is precisely this people-centered philosophy that enabled us to be united during the fight against the epidemic last year, and all Party members took the lead in doing their part. Therefore, I believe that our Party will continue to serve the people and lead the country and the people to greatness.
Long Bing:
As a new Party member, I also want to speak from my heart to the Party. I'm an ordinary truck driver. I think if without the CPC, we couldn't live such a happy life today. I am very grateful to the CPC. I feel very honored to be here and meet with you today. I have been working in the freight industry for 13 years. Loading trucks was time-consuming, energy-consuming, and costly work. Now, the road conditions and the truck conditions have improved. The efficiency of transportation has also improved. We owed this to the CPC. I'm grateful to the Party and wish our country prosperity. Thank you.
Zhao Pubo:
As a member of Generation Z, I earned championships in welding at the WorldSkills Competition three years in a row, going from a small mountain village to the world stage. I know that I am lucky that to be born in a great era. The Party and country attach great importance to the training of skills. I realized my dream with the support of the Party and the country. I feel extremely proud to join the CPC ahead of the Party centennial. General Secretary Xi Jinping once said that no matter how far we travel, we should not forget what we have experienced and why we started. I will definitely keep the Party oath in mind, perform my duties as a worker, and value the oath as a motivation to march forward. I will continue to practice my welding skills and use them to serve the country and carry out my original mission. Thank you.
Shou Xiaoli:
The four Party members on the stage just shared their stories with you. No matter how many years they have been with the Party, they have not forgotten their original aspirations, kept their mission in mind, and carried forward the Party's glorious tradition and fine conduct. They stay in their posts, perform their duties, work hard, and remain dedicated, demonstrating the makings of a CPC member.
The centenary ushers in the Party's prime. As the whole Party and the country celebrate this important moment , I think everyone is in the same mood — excited, proud, and full of expectations. Here, let us wish our great Party continued youth and vitality and wish our country a prosperous and better tomorrow!
Today's press conference concludes here. Thank you all. Goodbye, everyone!
