Nuclear Power Development Plan
In his speech at the General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2020, President Xi Jinping highlighted China's intention to scale up its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions through stronger climate-friendly policies and measures aimed at reaching peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. In his remarks at the Climate Ambition Summit on December 12, 2020, Xi Jinping unveiled China's commitment to lower its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by over 65 percent from the 2005 level and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent by 2030. To this end, the Chinese government has rolled out power development plans and medium- and long-term development plans for nuclear power to build a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system, and to develop nuclear power in a proactive and planned manner while prioritizing safety and security. The installed nuclear power capacity in China is expected to reach 70 GWe by 2025 and 150 GWe by 2035, with electricity generated by nuclear power plants accounting for about 10% of the country's total electricity generation.
