China.org.cnUpdated: May 13, 2021

The "Four Consciousnesses"

On January 29, 2016, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee publicly spelled out for the first time the "Four Consciousnesses":

maintaining political integrity;

thinking in terms of the broader picture;

following the leadership core; and

keeping in alignment with the CPC Central Committee.

These requirements for CPC members represent a new stage in China's governance. The CPC Central Committee with Xi Jinping at the core will take more responsibilities and heavier tasks to let the Chinese people have a sense of gain from the development.

The "Four Consciousnesses" are closely interconnected. The consciousness of the need to maintain political integrity means that CPC members are always firm in their convictions and Marxist belief, follow a correct political orientation, and stay in close unison with the Central Committee in thought and deed.

The consciousness of the need to think in terms of the broader picture means that CPC members balance the relationships between national and regional conditions, with the overall interest in mind.

The consciousness of the need to follow the leadership core means that CPC members focus on major issues and always remember the needs of the Party and the people.

The consciousness of the need to keep in alignment means that CPC members always follow the Central Committee and never deviate from the correct direction.
