China sees surge in departure tax refunds in H1 2026

China has continued to improve its refund-upon-purchase services for overseas travelers. In the first half of 2026, the number of overseas visitors claiming departure tax refunds surged 366% year on year, while the sales of tax-refunded goods and the value of tax refunds both rose 69%, said Rong Hailou, chief economist of the State Taxation Administration, at a Tuesday press conference.
