The United Nations (UN) Global Compact, an initiative on corporate sustainability under the UN framework, launched its official website in Chinese on Monday.

It is the first website in a UN official language other than English, showcasing our commitment and attention to Chinese companies and stakeholders, said Liu Meng, head of the Asia Pacific Networks of the UN initiative, at the launching ceremony.

The move is part of the organization's efforts to keep Chinese companies informed of the latest and best international information, knowledge and practices in sustainable development and encourage them to run their businesses as responsible global corporate citizens, according to the organization.

Launched in 2000 under the initiative of former UN chief Kofi Annan, the UN Global Compact guides and supports the global business community in advancing UN goals and values through responsible corporate practices.

With close to 10,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 170 countries and regions, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, according to the organization.

The Chinese government joined Global Compact in 2007. Since then, close to 300 Chinese companies have pledged to align their strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption advocated by the initiative, Liu said.
