The Belt and Road Initiative

"Belt and Road" is the short form of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. During his visit to Central Asia in September 2013 and to Southeast Asia in October of the same year, President Xi Jinping respectively proposed jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which received major attention from the international community.

Upholding the principles of extensive consultation, joint contributions, and shared benefits, the Belt and Road focuses on promoting policy coordination, infrastructure connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. It is committed to comprehensively promoting pragmatic cooperation among participating countries and building a community with shared interests, future, and responsibility featuring political mutual trust, economic integration, and cultural inclusion. The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation is the highest-standard international activity under the framework of this initiative.

The Belt and Road Initiative positions peace and development at the core of international cooperation, which aligns with the common interests of all parties and conforms to the trends of regional and global cooperation. It has become a popular international public good and international cooperation platform involving two thirds of countries and one third of international organizations in the world. As of February 2023, China had signed more than 200 Belt and Road cooperation documents with 151 countries and more than 32 international organizations, formulating more than 3,000 cooperation projects with an investment scale of nearly US$1 trillion. International cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative has effectively promoted the economic and social development of participating countries and people-to-people bonds by bringing a real sense of fulfilment to affected local people.
