Beijing-Hebei-Tianjin sees sharp PM2.5 reduction in Q4 2017

Twenty-eight cities in the Beijing-Hebei-Tianjin region and the surrounding area saw an average of 34.3 percent drop in PM2.5 density in the last quarter of 2017, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Among these cities, Shijiazhuang, capital city of Hebei Province, recorded the biggest reduction in PM2.5 density of 54.8 percent, officials said.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the average density of PM2.5 in the 28 monitored cities ranged from 49 micrograms per cubic meter to 97 micrograms per cubic meter. Following Shijiazhuang, the density of PM2.5 in Beijing and Langfang of Hebei Province dropped by 53.8 percent and 45.5 percent respectively.

The environmental officials noted that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region could see worsening air quality in late January and early February due to unfavorable weather conditions. The officials called for these areas to take further measures to combat heavy pollution in order to ensure that they achieve the goal of improving air quality.
